Visiting our Nation’s Capital last weekend was an unforgettable experience! First of all, exploring history and our country’s roots through the eyes of a 14-year-old is a pretty cool experience. He is just finishing up studying World War I and beginning to learn about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. What a powerful to time to visit Washington, with its rich history, and learn all about the the leaders and events that shaped our great country.
Friday afternoon we hopped off the plane and didn’t skip a beat. We dropped our luggage at the hotel then walked straight to see the Washington Monument, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the newer World War II Memorial. Fall is truly an amazing time of year to stroll these grounds. It’s like they’re painted a beautiful array of red, orange, gold and brown. I’m sure spring is mesmerizing as well.

Later that night we had fun eating apps at the hotel and sitting around playing cards. Later, we headed over to Georgetown to see what all the talk was about. It is such a lively, cool place in the evening! Also, it backs right up to the water, which only adds to the party AND ambiance.

Saturday we were up-and-at it as tourists again, headed to the Capital for a tour and the Newseum. The Newseum was top of the recommendation list from two friends. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it sure did blow me away. It’s a little more costly, considering most other museums are free, but totally worth it. Other perks of the Newseum are the Wolfgang Puck lunch area which has a super yummy salad bar {also serves wine} and if your tickets don’t expire after the one day, so you can come back the next day if you can’t get it all in. The Vietnam War exhibit at the Newseum was very well-done and memorable.
Here’s what I wore for exploring the city on Saturday. The weather was kinda yucky that day so I stayed comfy and casual. 
The rest of the day we strolled around, popping into the Smithsonian to see the Hope Diamond {then pretty much headed out of there because it was super crowded} and we stopped at a little outdoor café for a glass of wine and chocolate cake. We at dessert at every meal in honor of Mr. T’s birthday! We ended the afternoon at the Holocaust Museum, and there really aren’t words for this. It is so powerful and I think we all owe it to ourselves to visit this place.
Saturday night we had reservations at the beloved Old Ebbitt Grill for Mr. T’s birthday celebration. It did not disappoint! I had crab cake, Connor had fish n’ chips and Mr.T had tons of oysters. Everything was divine! We are headed out…

Sunday was a gorgeous day and we walked from our hotel to see the White House. It was so much closer to the street/public than I had imagined {or how depicted on Scandal…ha!}.
I pray Mr. T and I are able to take the other kids around this pivotal age to see DC. It was by far one of my favorite weekend getaways yet.
