Guest post: A beauty routine from the inside out by Tabetha Motes

If you’re like me, this time of year is the worst for skin! My lips are chapped and my face is pale and dry. After having lunch with my friend Tabetha recently and noticing how fantastic her skin was looking, I asked if she might be interested in doing a lil chat on the blog about her regimen. Here’s all her secrets to looking fab.

Me: Sooo what’s your secret lady?

Tabetha: Over the years I’ve pretty much done it all, and for the past 6 months are so I’ve incorporated some items that I absolutely love. My skin seems to be appreciating it!

First, have started to look more inward for my skin care. I’ve started incorporating tumeric as much as possible. Tumeric is like a super spice for anti-aging, it has anti-inflammatory properties and fights fine lines and wrinkles, while promoting smooth glowing skin. I like to mix it into a chai tea latte by frothing up some almond/coconut milk and adding a teaspoon of tumeric, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and a tablespoon of honey.  It’s a perfect night-cap! You can also take tumeric capsules if you don’t like the taste.

Another internal incorporation is collagen powder. This helps keep my skin plump, and my hair and nails strong.  It gets a little thick but I mix it with these amazing pomegranate fizz sticks from Arbonne which have loads of B vitamins and other minerals that give you energy, and they taste great. I call it my morning cocktail. 🙂

I’ve also been taking a glucosamine supplement to help increase the hyrolaunic acid production from within.

Me: You learn something new every day! I never associated turmeric or glucosamine with youthful skin! So what are you loving for the application part?

Tabetha: I use two different serums and put them on right after I wash my face. I do not use a toner, but that is just because I personally don’t like them. If you’re a toner person by-all-means keep at it, I’ve just never been a big fan. So after washing, I take one small pump of Niacinamide and 1 small pump of the MK Volufirm lifting serum and massage it into my skin focusing on my forehead, temples and anywhere I think may be prone to wrinkles. Any vitamin C serum is also a great idea! I wait a few mins before doing anything else to my skin to give this time to really absorb and get to work.  Next, I add my eye cream, and this MK Firming Eye cream is awesome.  Since I’ve started using it I can tell that my dark circles have lightened up a bit (and it is not because I’m getting lots of sleep).

Next I apply moisturizer, and I’m currently on jar 2 of the Neutrogena hydro boost water gel. It is my newest find and current fave.  I absolutely love this moisturizer! It goes on very lightweight and keeps my skin feeling amazing.  In the past my main skin issue has been dehydration, my esthetician would constantly tell me I need to drink more water, and I do my best. Last month when i went for my routine (which is once every 6 months, facial) she had no complaints! I was totally expecting the oh I see you’re still not drinking water talk, but nope, I got the wow, what are using, and it is this little hydro gel miracle worker and for sub $20 it is well worth it!

How about tinted moisturizers?

Tabetha: Finally, I use the one product I absolutely cannot live without, my Beauty Counter Dew Skin.  I’ve been using this for about 2 years now and really Beauty Counter is doing so many things right. With their products I know what I am putting on my face will absolutely in no way harm it, and it is really the best feeling foundation/tinted moisturizer I have ever used.  It evens out my complexion and just feels amazing on. It lets your face shine through but just smooths out what every redness or splotches you may have.

Beauty from the inside out

Any other secrets to share?

Tabetha: I must say, the best thing I do for my face is shaving.  Yup, I shave my face. I started doing this about 10 years ago and I’ve never looked back.  Everyone I tell I do this always says the same thing, “but your hair will grow back thick and dark!” Wrong, it doesn’t. I don’t go around sporting a 5 o’clock shadow. I’ve shaved and then gone months before shaving again and I never have dark thick hair on my face. What it does do is exfoliate your face like you’ve never seen. It also it gets all the hair off your face – yes you all have hair on your face, and you will be amazed how much the first time you shave!

After shaving you’ll notice how amazing your moisturizer and serums absorb into your skin, how nice your makeup goes on and how incredibly smooth your skin feels. We’re talking baby bottom smooth!

A few tips from a pro:

  • DO NOT let your significant other walk in while you’re doing this, it’s not a particularly sexy thing to watch. Ha!
  • DO use the cheap single blade razors, such as the orange and white Bics.
  • DO be very careful for your hairline and eyebrows.

I start at the middle of my forehead and go out to one side and then repeat on the other side then move to your cheeks, always shave downward and go slow!

Many thanks to Tabetha for sharing! I’ve already ordered the collagen and a few other items before this is even published. I don’t know ’bout y’all, but I love hearing from others what really works for them rather than have a magazine tell me the latest and greatest. Every time I’ve gone that route I’ve been burned.

A good skincare routine is all about gauging what your budget and schedule will allow you to take on, and always be willing to make adjustments when you're not getting the results intended. Share on X
